Spring is here, and the fun of flag football and cheer-leading is just around the corner for the North Delta Longhorns. It’s not too late, though, to get your boys and girls registered for a March 12th start.

Newly elected president Orlando Degaldo is excited to build teams that will match last year. In 2023, the PeeWee team won the championships for the Vancouver Mainland Football League (VMFL), and the Cheer team won the Spirit Award at the VMFL Cheer Competition in November.

North Delta Longhorns have a 62-year history of football in North Delta, helping kids from under 8 to U19 develop skills, physical activity and teamwork, all wrapped up in a fun and energetic package.

One of the appeals of flag football for youth is its accessibility. Unlike tackle football, flag football minimizes the risk of injury, making it suitable for children of all ages and skill levels, and it’s co-ed. The safety aspect allows kids to focus on having fun and improving their game without fearing getting hurt.

Teamwork is another essential aspect. Players learn to work together to advance the ball down the field, strategize plays, and communicate with their teammates. They will learn the fundamentals of passing, catching, running and evading defenders. The non-contact nature of the sport encourages agility, speed, and spatial awareness.

Each Longhorn team typically has 7-10 players and two coaches.

Much of the fun of any game is the sidelines, where parents, family and friends cheer on the team alongside the North Delta Longhorns cheer-leading teams.

The Spring Cheer Bootcamp is happening soon. On Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8:00 p.m. from March 12th to June 4th, at John Oliver Park in Ladner, boys and girls will focus on conditioning, skills, simple stunts, basic cheer rules and sharpening motions. Registration is available at https://ndfa.powerupsports.com/
