Seaquam students Gurmehar Randhawa (grade 8) and Tanroz Gill (grade 10) both have a passion for environmental issues, and were rewarded for their outstanding achievements in BC Wildlife’s Young Conservationist Scholarship Program.

Gurmehar Randhawa emerged as the overall winner of the program, securing a $1,500 scholarship for his remarkable project aimed at fostering environmental stewardship within the community and raising awareness about combating climate change. Gurmehar’s initiative involved creating and distributing educational pamphlets and conducting workshops for multiple elementary schools across the district. Inspired by a family beach outing marred by litter, Gurmehar’s dedication to environmental advocacy shines through his commitment to spreading awareness and educating younger generations.

As the program’s runner-up, Tanroz Gill was awarded a $500 scholarship for her impactful project focused on removing invasive ivy from a neighborhood park and reintroducing native species to promote ecosystem health. Tanroz led multiple removal and planting events with fellow students and community members, showcasing her dedication to environmental restoration and community engagement.

Michael Iachetta, a teacher at Seaquam Secondary, commended Gurmehar and Tanroz for their exemplary dedication to environmental conservation. He expressed pride in their passion for protecting the environment and inspiring others to follow suit.

While the official Young Conservationist Scholarship Program has concluded, both Gurmehar and Tanroz remain committed to their environmental efforts. Gurmehar plans to continue hosting workshops for elementary students and presenting at Pro-D Days, while Tanroz aims to further revitalize the park and share her project with local elementary schools with the support of Seaquam’s Green Team.
