The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has finalized its inquiry into an injury sustained during an arrest in Delta.

On October 22, 2023, at approximately 4:25 p.m., officers from the Delta Police Department responded to a stabbing report on Ladner Trunk Road.

Upon arrival, officers encountered a man in the vicinity and endeavored to apprehend him. The man attempted to flee but was subsequently apprehended and transported to a local hospital for treatment of a severe injury.

During an interview with IIO investigators, the man disclosed that he sustained his injury while climbing over a fence to evade police.

After thorough examination of evidence, which includes the injured man’s statement, video footage, medical records, and police reports, the Chief Civilian Director has determined that there are no reasonable grounds to suspect any officer of wrongdoing, and the police’s actions did not contribute to the man’s injury. It was established that his injury occurred due to his decision to climb a fence in an effort to evade law enforcement.

The IIO’s investigation has concluded.

The IIO serves as the independent civilian oversight agency for law enforcement in British Columbia. It investigates all incidents involving officers that lead to serious harm or fatality, regardless of whether there are allegations of misconduct.
