The Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation announced the acquisition of a cutting-edge 3D breast tomosynthesis system, made possible entirely through generous donor contributions.

Delta Hospital has been committed to providing comprehensive screening and diagnostic mammography services, crucial for assessing breast tissue health and detecting breast cancer. Integrating seamlessly with the current 2D system in the Peter C. and Elizabeth Toigo Diagnostic Services Building, the new 3D breast tomosynthesis system promises sharper, higher-resolution imaging, delivering a more comfortable experience for diagnostic patients.

Demonstrated to detect more invasive cancers, particularly in patients with higher tissue density, 3D breast tomosynthesis represents a significant leap forward in early breast cancer detection when treatment outcomes are most favourable. Its implementation marked a substantial enhancement to mammography technology at the Delta Hospital Campus of Care.

Cathy Wiebe, Executive Director of Delta and White Rock/South Surrey Health Services and Delta and Peace Arch hospitals, expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with the foundation, affirming, “We are thrilled to introduce this advanced technology to Delta. The new 3D mammography system represents a vital progression in breast care for our community, offering patients the latest diagnostic support.”

Lisa Hoglund, Executive Director of the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation, echoed this sentiment: “Our Foundation takes great pride in contributing to the evolution of healthcare in Delta by funding state-of-the-art equipment. Thanks to the unwavering support of our donors, we ensure our community has access to cutting-edge medical imaging technology close to home.”

Statistics from the BC Cancer Agency revealed that approximately 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Regular screening mammograms are pivotal in early detection, facilitating more treatment options and improved prognosis. Introducing the new 3D Mammography system not only offers patients in Delta and surrounding areas access to advanced imaging technology but also promises a more comfortable screening experience.
