The City of Delta and Sungod Skating Club are partnering to host the community’s first-ever celebration of World Ice Skating Day this weekend.
Created by the International Skating Union in 2022, World Ice Skating Day is a global event taking place in more than 47 different countries around the world. Its key objective is to introduce ice skating to first-time and beginner skaters to create a memorable experience that celebrates the spirit of ice skating.
The event, happening from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 3 at Sungod Recreation Centre (7815 112th St.) will be a free come-and-try session inclusive to all, with music, on-ice games, prizes and fun times, as well as demonstrations from various local ice sports organizations and a special appearance from Olympic gold medallist Patrick Chan.
Sungod Skating Club president Ronnie Perkins said the organization takes great pride and excitement in hosting World Ice Skating Day collaboration with the City of Delta, calling it a remarkable global celebration dedicated to the joy and thrill of ice skating.
“This event aims to commemorate the activity of ice skating, offering an opportunity for community members unfamiliar with the sport to experience it firsthand,” Sungod Skating Club president Ronnie Perkins said in a statement to the Reporter.
“Additionally, it serves as a platform to highlight the diverse range of ice sports within the community. Whether you’re a seasoned ice skating enthusiast or someone looking to try it for the first time, this is a day you won’t want to miss.”
“The City of Delta is happy to support the Sungod Skating Club’s initiative to host the World Ice Skating Day and the opportunity to provide a fun and free skate to the community,” Steve Napper, recreation service manager for the City of Delta, said in an email to the Reporter.
This event will showcase a number of ways to learn and enjoy skating, ranging from learn-to-skate programs, recreational drop-in skating or through one of the local figure skate clubs, hockey and ringette associations.”
This event has limited capacity and pre-registration is required for all skaters and spectators (except infants under one year old) at cityofdelta.perfectmind.com.
Free admission includes skate and helmet rentals. CSA approved multiple impact helmets are mandatory for participants 13 years and under.
