January 31, 1931 - April 21, 2023
It is with great sorrow, we announce the passing of dear Mother, Shirley Jean Featherstone (nee Suddon). She left in the comfort of being surrounded by close family and loved ones.
Shirley was preceded in death by her loving husband, Kenneth and her dear brother, Alan. Left to feel her absence are her sons Michael and Dale and daughter Nancy, (and their partners, Sonja, Teresa, Merlita) along with five beautiful grandchildren (Nicola, Amy, Marina, Rashell, Damara) plus a multitude of the best friends, made over the course of her lifetime.
Shirley was born in Saskatoon on January 31st, 1931. Her father Thomas was a Postmaster, and her Mother Alice Maud, was an avid pianist, who shared her skills at many community events.
Shirley attended Nutana Collegiate where she studied nursing. Shirley enjoyed keeping in touch with her old friends from the early days.
Shirley married Kenneth William Featherstone in Regina, August 25th, 1956. The couple moved to Calgary where they raised their children in the Haysboro neighborhood. In 1968 the family moved to Delta, British Columbia where they lived for over 40 years.
Shirley cared deeply about her friends new and old. We will all miss her raucous rendition of Happy Birthday sung over the phone with love. Shirley never stopped learning and enjoying every day, while being completely invested in raising her family, with her husband, Ken. There was always a place at the table in Shirley's kitchen and many fun times and great meals were shared over the years.
While raising her family, Shirley joined the Fraser Valley Reginal Library, where she worked for many years. Shirley loved giving the Story Time at the Library and she was always there with a warm welcoming smile. After retiring, she volunteered with the VSO, putting in many hours helping to organize all the volunteers. Her love of music, no doubt, coming from her mother Alice. Her dear brother Alan was head of the Fine Arts at the Toronto Metropolitan Library, which inspired Shirley in her librarian career. Alan is survived by his loving son Ted.
Shirley loved her garden and all the animals big and small. She has requested that any donations in her memory be given to the S.P.C.A or the World Wildlife Fund.
She had a heart of gold, was kind and gentle, and an inspiration to all whose lives she touched. She will be deeply missed.
