Joseph Donald Smith died peacefully in Surrey, British Columbia on February 21, 2023.
Joseph is survived by his son, Todd Donald Smith of Santa Barbara, California his wife Dianne, older brother Jim Smith of Surrey, British Columbia and wife Ava, and younger brother, Tom Smith of Chilliwack, British Columbia. Joseph is also survived by his close friend, Dennis A. of Surrey, British Columbia and "Walking Partner" Leo Mahar of Surrey, British Columbia.
He was born on May 17, 1937, in Surrey, British Columbia, to Elsie and Percy Smith. He graduated from North Surrey High School in 1956 and while continuing his education, followed his father to become a boat owner and fished the Fraser River at 14 years of age. He worked 10 years out of the Port Mann CNR as he maintained his fishing career. Joseph then started Fraser Boat Launching Co. at his residence on the Fraser River - a company to place boats in and out of the river. Joe also housed fishing boats on his residential property. He designed his own equipment used for this process.
Joseph dedicated a major component of his life to Alcoholics Anonymous. Since joining AA, he achieved 35 years of sobriety - since October 8, 1988. He dedicated his time to helping the community through Alcoholics Anonymous and made a difference in the lives of others walking the same journey he had. At the same time, Joseph made many life-long friends within the association.
Joe was a lover of modern Jazz and for decades, he attended and "danced to" Sunday afternoon Jazz sessions in South Surrey with his favourite lady friend. He was also part of a group of approximately 30 high school alumni who graduated from North Surrey High School. Together they continued to meet every 3 months for the past 30 years. Joseph was a strong admirer of the National Basketball Association and followed the teams on TV along with the NHL Vancouver Canucks.
