“Police, fire and ambulance responded to a flatbed truck that was travelling westbound and collided with the cement barrier and was hanging over the edge of the roadway,” said Delta Police public affairs coordinator Sharlene Brooks, noting that the call came in at 12:45 p.m.
“The way the vehicle hit the barrier it removed it from its placement and his vehicle was just heading over the edge.”
The flatbed truck appeared to glance off a semi-trailer before hitting the shoulder highway barrier, Brooks added. The semi-trailer received only negligible damage.
She said that Delta fire crews rescued the driver who sustained only minor injuries.
Emergency crews are on scene dealing with the accident but Delta Police say that the righthand westbound lane on Hwy. 17 is closed between 104 Avenue and Nordel Way.
According to Brooks, both westbound lanes will be closed for approximately 30 minutes as the flatbed truck is towed. After the flatbed is removed, the inner (lefthand) westbound lane will reopen. The righthand lane will remain closed until the barrier is fixed.
