South Delta crime beat, week of Jan. 31

A selection of property crimes submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department

The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.

The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:

Ladner

• Feb. 2, 8:30 p.m., 8400-block Ladner Trunk Rd.: Police were dispatched to a reported impaired driver and, after locating the vehicle, conducted a traffic stop to check for sobriety. Police subsequently detained them for impaired driving, and read them the breath demand. The driver later provided samples that were three times the legal limit. Police charged the driver, issued them a driving prohibition, impounded their vehicle and transported them to Surrey cells.

• Feb. 3, 10:34 a.m., 3600-block Highway 17: Police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle travelling 125 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. Police identified the driver and subsequently issued them a ticket for excessive speed, which is accompanied by a mandatory seven-day vehicle impoundment.

• Feb. 5, 2:31 p.m., 4900-block 42B Ave.: Police were dispatched to a reported disturbance at the tennis courts wherein an unknown person was challenging people to fights. Police located the individual, who was admittedly intoxicated and became verbally and physically aggressive with police. Police subsequently arrested the individual for being intoxicated in a public place and transported them to Surrey cells, where they were held until sober.

• Feb. 5, 8:37 p.m., 4800-block 53rd St.: Police were dispatched to a reported mischief after a resident confronted an unknown male defacing private property with graffiti. Police encourage anyone observing acts of vandalism such as this to report them to police from a safe position and to not engage.

Tsawwassen and Tsawwassen First Nation

• Jan. 31, 1800-block 56th St.: Police were dispatched to a reported stolen moving truck with U.S. plates taken sometime in the past three days. Police were later advised that a vehicle matching that description had been located in another area in South Delta, and confirmed it to be the same vehicle. The file is under investigation.

• Feb. 1, 3:00 a.m., Farrell Crescent: Police were dispatched to multiple reports of thefts from autos in the area, and confirmed suspects had gained entry to at least two vehicles. No damage was reported to either vehicle, but various items ranging from children’s backpacks to tools were stolen, and some were later discovered dumped nearby. The files are under investigation.

• Feb. 1, 12:24 p.m., 1400-block Windsor Cres.: Police were dispatched to a reported recovered stolen vehicle, after a homeowner found a motorbike dumped in the bushes with damage to the ignition block. Police confirmed with the owner, who attended the scene and confirmed it had been damaged and stolen from their driveway.

• Feb. 5, 12:24 a.m., 1600-block 56th St.: Police conducted a traffic stop to check for sobriety. After confirming the driver’s identity, police read them the approved screening device demand, which resulted in a “fail.” Police subsequently issued the driver a 90-day driving prohibition and a mandatory 30-day vehicle impoundment notice.
