Road improvements are coming to 72 Avenue in Clayton Heights.
According to a City of Surrey corporate report, the road work will be done on 72nd between Fraser Highway and 184th Street.
City council voted on Corporate Report R068 at their regular meeting April 8, approving the nearly $3 million worth of road construction work.
The report, submitted by Engineering Dept. GM Scott Neuman, recommended council award Contract No. 1723-015-11 to GB Paving Ltd. in the amount of $ 2,858,626 for street upgrades, set the expenditure authorization limit for the contract up to $3,150,000, and authorize Neuman to execute the contract.
“The intent of this report is to seek Council’s approval to award a contract for the 72 Avenue road improvements from 184 Street to Fraser Highway,” Neuman noted in the document.
In May last year, Surrey city council passed corporate report R071, which identified “strategic transportation short-term projects” and prioritized key roads that needed to be improved in order to help support the city’s growth.
The corporate report noted that one of those key corridors was 72nd Avenue between 180th Street to Fraser Highway. The one-block segment would help improve traffic flow in the area and would include the installation of a new traffic light at the intersection of Fraser Highway and 72nd Avenue.
“The construction package related to this contract consists of extending 72 Avenue from 180 Street to Fraser Highway with vehicle travel lanes,” Neuman wrote in his report. “The extension of 72 Avenue will provide improved access to the local neighborhood in advance of the upcoming construction of the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain Project.”
The contract includes intersection work at both 72 and 184 (with two left turn lanes being added) and other paving and roadworks along 72nd Avenue from 180th to 184th.
The city received nine bids for the project, with the highest being more than $3.7 million. GB Paving’s bid, at just over $2.8 million, was the lowest. A part of the contract, GB agreed to complete the work within 120 working days.
“GB Paving Ltd.’s past performance on similar work has been satisfactory,” Neuman wrote.
After council approval, GB is now expected to start the work near the end of April and have the project wrapped up by October.
“Construction of the new signal at Fraser Highway and 72nd Avenue will be coordinated with the construction of the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain Project,” Neuman added.
Money for the project is available under the 2024 Transportation Budget.
