Get ready to light up the night as the City of Delta hosts its first Luminary Festival since the pandemic.

The popular one-night festival will return to North Delta’s Sunstone Park on Saturday (Sept. 10) from 6-10 p.m. as residents say goodbye to summer with costumes, lights and lanterns.

“I am so thrilled to welcome Delta residents back to the Luminary Festival this year,” Mayor George Harvie said in a statement to Black Press Media.

“This hallmark celebration is one of our most unique events that puts a spotlight on our deep and diverse arts and culture community.”

Sure to capture the hearts of children and adults alike, the night will include buskers, circus performers, light art installations, family-friendly activities, food trucks and live music, with percussion ensemble Kutapira hitting the main stage at 9 p.m.

But the highlight of the celebration is the lantern parade around the park, which will take place starting at 8:30 p.m.

Guests are encouraged to dress up in costumes and bring lanterns to illuminate the park – there will also be lantern-making activities at the festival – and post photos on social media using the hashtag #illuminatedelta22 for a chance to win a six-month Delta parks and recreation drop-in pass.

“Whether it is through your homemade lanterns or creative costuming, I cannot wait to see how our community comes together to close out what has been another wonderful summer,” said Harvie.

While there is no on-site parking at Sunstone Park during the festival, the city will be running a free shuttle service from the North Delta Recreation Centre (11415 84th Ave.) beginning at 6 p.m. The bus has room for walkers, wheelchairs and scooters and is equipped with an automatic lift.

There will also be a few parking spots reserved across the street from the park on Delsom Crescent for people who require accessible parking and are unable to board the bus.

Lantern-crafting tips and more festival information can be found on the City of Delta website.
