Delta North MLA Ravi Kahlon is creating an ongoing personal scholarship for graduating North Delta high school students.

Kahlon announced the Ravi Kahlon Community Service Scholarship in a video posted to his Facebook page on June 9, one day after taking his oath of office.

Standing in front of the legislature building in Victoria, Kahlon explained the motivation behind his first move as MLA.

“Throughout the campaign I talked about the important values that [my parents] raised me with, you know, they always said to me growing up respect your elders, work hard, make an honest living, and ensure that the next generation has more opportunities than you did,” Kahlon said.

“So in that spirit I’d like to announce that my first thing as an MLA for North Delta is to start a personal scholarship of $500 at all the high schools in North Delta.”

The scholarship will be open to graduating Grade 12 students at North Delta, Delview, Sands, Burnsview and Seaquam secondary schools. Applicants must support social justice and democratic ideals, be enrolled in a post-secondary institution and be involved in volunteer work in the community or school that “aims to create progressive social change.”

“I’m super excited about it, and this award basically will go to a person who is committed to their studies, but also committed to making their community a better place,” Kahlon said.

Kahlon asked residents to tag eligible youth in the video’s comments section, where he later wrote that he would leave it up to each school to decide the recipient.
