Incentives sweeten the deal for efficient home heating upgrades

Fortis BC offers rebates of up to $1,500 on high-efficiency boilers
A new boilers can be between 80 and 98 per cent efficient – and can save you up to 40 per cent on your utility costs, note the team from Good Guys Heating, Plumbing and Cooling.

If you’re tired of high home heating costs eating up more and more of your household budget, it may be time to upgrade to a new high-efficiency boiler.

“Many older boilers are only about 65 per cent efficient, and some are even less,” explains Allan Lake, owner of Good Guys Heating, Plumbing and Cooling in Surrey. “This means that only 65 per cent of the heat they produce is transferred to the water that heats your home. The rest is lost up the chimney. New boilers are between 80 and 98 per cent efficient – and can save you up to 40 per cent on your utility costs.”

Recognizing the potential for both energy savings and cost savings for home owners, FortisBC is offering an incentive to upgrade: rebates of up to $1,500 when you replace your old boiler with a new, high-efficiency boiler.

Here’s a look at how it works:

  • $1,000 rebate for a 94 per cent (or higher) efficiency boiler
  • $1,500 for an Energy Star combination boiler – a system that provides hot water for both space heating and tap water, replacing both your existing boiler and hot water tank.

The $1,500 combination boiler rebate includes a $1,200 rebate for the boiler and a $300 two-upgrade bonus, since the boiler counts as both a new space heating and water heating system. However, note that each home can only receive a single two-upgrade bonus.

Note that your current boiler must be more than 10 years old and not require repairs of more than $1,000. See the CleanBC rebate program PDF for more conditions and details.

Boiler rebate for low-income households

Low-income households can receive a $2,000 rebate on a 94-per-cent-efficient boiler – both combination and non-combination systems – with a maximum heating capacity of 80,000 BTUs.
