Spring Clean-Up planned for South Surrey neighbourhood

The saying “many hands make light work” is expected to ring true in South Surrey next weekend, at a cleanup event hosted by the Ocean Park Community Association.

“It’s been a few years since we’ve been able to host an event like this, and we feel it’s time for people to come out, work together and take care of our community!” OPCA president Daisy Lifvenborg said, in a news release promoting the organization’s May 27 Spring Clean-Up.

Set for 10 a.m. till 2 p.m., the event – part of Surrey’s annual Environmental Extravaganza and Love Where You Live Campaign – offers a number of ways to get involved. Registration for the activities is underway, and organizers say “solid” numbers have already been logged for most. However, more hands are still needed.

For the recycling fair, registration is requested in order for organizers to have an idea of what to expect in terms of volume.

To be held at the Ocean Park Hall in partnership with Recycle-It and MARR (Major Appliance Recycling Roundtable), the fair is an opportunity for people to drop off their beverage containers, electronics and small appliances (no fridges or other large appliances will be accepted). Recycle-It is to provide a five-tonne truck for the occasion.

Other activities on the cleanup-event itinerary include:

• a self-led graffiti- and litter-removal effort, with removal kits provided by the OPCA;

• weeding at the Ocean Park Community Orchard;

• an invasive ivy-removing project at Fun Fun Park; and,

• Bees and Books at the Ocean Park Community Orchard for youngsters, including storytime with Leslee from Ocean Park Library and catching up with the HoneyBee Centre.

Organizers say those planning to sign up for weeding or the invasive-species removal should bring their own supplies, including gardening gloves.

Lifvenborg encouraged anyone interested to check out the activities.

“Stop by for an hour or stay all day,” she said.

A highlight of the day is the anticipated unveiling of new street banners for the village. The effort is one of the beautification projects funded by the association through membership, Ocean Park Hall revenue and the City of Surrey grant programs.

“It’s the association and our members bringing projects such as seasonal holiday lights, spring flowers and the street banners in the village to life,” Lifvenborg said.

“Without a strong membership, these projects would not be possible, and sometimes we need to remind people of that.”
