Elementary students looking for a chance to learn firsthand how the city is run can apply now to be Delta’s Mayor for a Day.

The annual contest, which gives local youth the chance to “immerse themselves in a day of civic leadership [while] serving alongside Mayor George V. Harvie,” is open to students in grades five to seven who reside in Delta.

The winner will be picked up at their school, enjoy lunch with the mayor, tour city hall and shadow the mayor through the day’s events.

“Mayor for a Day is a fantastic opportunity for local youth to explore the world of local government and learn more about the community they call home,” Harvie said in a press release.

“Each year, I look forward to spending time with the bright and thoughtful students who take part in this program and giving them the chance to see the important work that we do at city hall. I hope this experience will inspire future leaders and help students foster a deeper connection with their community.”

The contest is open now and closes on Friday, April 26. To apply, youth can head to delta.ca/mayorforaday and submit their response to the question, “Why do you want to be Mayor for a Day?”
