Guildford Recreation Centre was buzzing with energy and excitement Saturday, said Jordan Campbell, community service coordinator for Sport Surrey.
Saturday was the annual Slam Jam youth event. “It is a celebration of multiple different components for youth in the community,” Campbell said. Over 300 youth participated in the festival at the the recreation centre (15105 105 Ave.)
Youth basketball and dance tournaments were a part of the fun, along music, prizes, special guest appearances and more.
The five-on-five (or 5v5) basketball tournament welcomed registration for teams and individuals, a maximum of eight players per roster in junior, senior and ladies divisions.
The dance competition involved 2v2 All Styles and 2v2 Break Battle. Judges included world-renowned dancers Humuza and B-girl Emma.
The winning basketball teams will receive rings. Other awards, such as sportsmanship prizes, were given out, and the top dancers also received prizes, Campbell said.
Admission was free at the day-long youth festival, which went from noon until 8 p.m. “We’d like to offer barrier-free opportunities for the youth, so make sure it’s accessible for everybody,” Campbell said.
