A group of area youths organized a tree-planting event in a South Surrey park earlier this month – something they are planning on doing yearly, going forward.
About 30 people from the Dawoodi Bohra Muslim Community of Vancouver came out to plant 40 trees on the afternoon of Oct. 14 at Orchard Grove Park, led by the efforts of 16-year-old Naumann Mascati from Surrey.
“Naumann envisions that this will become an annual event and will also encourage younger members of society to participate and take up initiatives of this nature, and contribute to the solution to address our current climate change challenges,” his mother Jumana Mascati shared.
Most of the participants were youth aged from six to 15 years old.
“I’ve regularly been involved in environmental protection programs, taking part in and leading cleanups around my high school and at a local park,” Naumann said.
“I am glad that kids in my community took part in this event so we can learn from a young age the importance of planting trees. Our youth should be part of the solution for the climate crisis that we are currently facing.
“It’s a priority to protect our planet for our future.”
Jumana added that Dawoodi Bohras around North America also took part in planting trees on the same day, as part of the group’s initiative called Project Rise. The philanthropic endeavour aims to make change in different sectors by providing volunteer service and charity work.
