White Rock Whalers beat Grandview to stretch win streak to three games

Pacific Junior Hockey League team also has recent victories over Surrey and Ridge Meadows

The White Rock Whalers are heating up.

After a win Saturday over the Grandview Steelers, the junior ‘B’ hockey squad finds itself on a three-game win streak, and just one point shy of moving up one rung in the Pacific Junior Hockey League’s Tom Shaw Conference.

Prior to a 4-3 win over Grandview on Dec. 1, the Whalers scored back-to-back wins to end November – 5-3 over the Surrey Knights on Nov. 24 and 2-1 over the Ridge Meadows Flames on Nov. 30.

Against the Steelers, the Whalers jumped out to a first-period lead on a goal from Kalem Burns just 2:42 into the game, and doubled the lead by the midway point of the period after a power-play tally from Ryan Doray.

Grandview cut the lead in half before the first intermission, however, on a goal from defenceman Maximilian Daerendinger, and in the second period the visitors took the lead after two more unanswered goals.

In the third period, however, White Rock stormed back to tie the game when Leland Konrath found the back of the Grandview net with 10 minutes left in the game. Then, with less than three minutes remaining, Whaler Calder Newson scored on the power play to put the home team in the lead for good.

Goaltender Zach Everett earned the win between the pipes for White Rock, stopping 33 of 36 shots.

The win boosted the expansion team’s record to 10-15-0-1 (win-loss-tie-overtime loss). They’re just one point back of the Port Moody Panthers – and White Rock has played one less game.

The Whalers were back on the ice Thursday night in Surrey to take on the winless Surrey Knights, but results were not available by Peace Arch News press deadline. On Saturday, the White Rock squad is back at Centennial Arena, hosting the Langley Trappers at 7:30 p.m.
