It’s already been a busy season in the pool for White Rock Divers, whose members brought home some heavy medal after the Provincials Dive Meet in Victoria June 1-2.
Several divers won medals at the provincial championship, where 15 members of the club competed.
Cam Leithead, Blair Yan, Nixon Laing, Hannah Clancy, Sophia Bosley, Vashti Haji, Raena Hampton, Kayden Johnson and Isabelle Wright all won medals at the meet, and White Rock Divers had six first-time qualifiers for the junior national championships: Adysen Argao, Clara Isaac, Kayden Johnson, Rachel Hutchinson, Wright and Leithead.
They will be joined at the junior national championships in July by already qualified divers: Mattias Frohloff, Clancy, Harsimran Rakhra, Amelia Semple – who won four out of five events – Laing and Yan.

The club’s athletes were busy at various competitions in May and June, including provincials, and the club now has the most age-group athletes in the province qualified for Junior Nationals, which are being held in July. The 14-18 age group competes in Saskatoon July 4-7, and the 13 and under compete July 18-21 in Regina.
Bev Boys, who started the White Rock Divers in 1994 with Margie Connors, has continued to support, mentor and coach the club since its inception.
She gave kudos to all the divers as well as coaches Igor Kopecky (head coach), Greg Cox and Cata O’Byrne, who were all “very proud and pleased with the results.”
Boys is optimistic the club’s divers will do well at Junior Nationals.
“I think we have the strongest development program ever for the club. The kids should all do very well. There is a standard they have to make just to go, so they will be ready to compete,” she said.
“The coaches and the divers have worked really hard. It will be very exciting!”
White Rock Divers members also competed at Novice Nationals in Calgary June 1-2, where Gray McAuley, 12, won third place in the 3m (three metre) and fourth in the 1m events and Keith Wong, 19, came first in platform (1m and 3m).
In the Junior Americas Cup in California May 23-26, Grandview Heights Secondary student Mattias Frohloff, 16, made his international debut representing Team Canada, coming in fifth on 3m and platform; Frohloff also placed 11th in 3m during Olympic trials May 17.
