There are only 31 of these jobs out there.

Thousands of young kids prepare themselves for an opportunity to one day be a starting goalie for an NHL team.

At the moment, there are two local products that are acting as starting goalies in the National Hockey League.

In Edmonton, Laurent Brossoit has been gifted an opportunity to act as the Oilers starting goaltender after Cam Talbot went down with an upper-body injury. Oilers head coach Todd McLellan said that Talbot would miss at least two weeks. He also mentioned that “it could be longer.”

The injury leaves Brossoit as the starter, meaning that two local netminders hole two of those pretigious31 jobs.

Last week, North Delta’s Tristan Jarry took over as the starting goalie for the Pittsburgh Penguins after two-time Stanley Cup champion Matt Murray was diagnosed with a leg injury.

Since taking over in the crease, Jarry has posted spectacular numbers. He posted his first career NHL shutout on Dec. 1st against the Buffalo Sabres, and beat that same Sabres team on Saturday in a 5-1 Penguins victory.

Jarry is now 4-0-2 in his six starts this season, failing to lose a game in regulation. His performance over those two games against the Sabres was extremely impressive, even if he was facing a downtrodden Sabres team.

Brossoit wasn’t so lucky in his matchups.

In his first game as the temporary starting goalie, Brossoit and the Oilers faced one of the highest-scoring teams in the league, the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Leafs peppered Brossoit with 35 shots, and Toronto ended up winning the game 6-4.

Edmonton was actually tied 4-4 with Toronto when there were just a few minutes left in the game. An own goal by defenceman Kris Russell that went viral ended up being the game lose… ahem, game-winner for the Leafs.

That left Brossoit with an 0-4 record through his first four starts of the season. On Saturday against the Calgary Flames, he allowed five goals once again. This time, the Oilers offence was able to come through with seven goals, giving Brossoit his first victory of the season in a 7-5 win.

While Brossoit’s numbers aren’t quite as stellar as Jarry’s, it still represents the first time in history that two netminders from Surrey/North Delta are labeled as starting goalies in the NHL.
