Langley hockey team one step closer to the Cup

Peewee A3 Eagles are the B.C. representative for Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup and victory would benefit Surrey's REC for Kids Society

A Langley peewee hockey team is aiming for their own version of a double-double.

The A3 Eagles are currently in Dawson Creek, competing at the B.C. tier 3 provincial championships.

And while they go for gold on the ice, the team is also hoping to win a major prize off of it.

The team has been named the B.C. regional winner for the Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup. As the regional winner, the Eagles receive $2,000 as well as an additional $2,000 for a charity of their choice.

They have chosen REC for Kids Society, an organization which aims to provide reconditioned sports and recreation equipment to children in need in Langley, Surrey, White Rock, Cloverdale and North Delta, as their charity of choice.

Langley was selected as one of 13 regional winners.

The team of 12 and 13-year-olds collected hockey and other sports equipment, which they then donated to the society.

They collected enough equipment, bikes and shoes to fill up a 15-passenger van.

This was just one of a few good deeds the team took upon themselves.

Last month, they swapped their hockey sticks for garbage pickers, and in less than two hours, the 17 players managed to collectively pick up 45 large bags of litter over a 16-km route which covered four ice rinks, three parks and a pair of bus loops between the Langley Events Centre and the George Preston Recreation Centre.

They made videos of both efforts and the equipment donation earned them the B.C. regional title.

The contest searches for the most impressive good deed across the country by a peewee hockey team and as the regional winner, the Langley boys are up against a dozen other entries.

Voting opens March 22 at 9 p.m. PST and closes on March 29 at 9 p.m. PST and each individual can vote once every 24 hours.

The winner, which will be announced at the end of the month, will receive a total of $10,000, another $5,000 for the charity of their choice, $5,000 for their minor hockey association and $5,000 for their provincial hockey association.

The winning team also receives a hometown celebration as well as having their names engraved on the Good Deeds Cup. They will also receive a championship banner and Sportsnet will air a one-minute video on the team during the Stanley Cup Final.
