Some of the biggest names on the Vancouver sports scene will be in South Surrey next week, lending their support to Nite of Champions, the annual gala event hosted by the Surrey/White Rock chapter of KidSport BC.

This year’s event – the seventh of its kind for the local chapter – is set for Tuesday (Jan. 22) at Hazelmere Golf Course, and will feature Vancouver Canucks head coach Travis Green as the keynote speaker.

In addition to Green, the event will also feature “a cast of thousands,” according to Ronnie Paterson, the president of the Surrey/White Rock KidSport chapter. Other notable attendees are to include former Vancouver Canucks goalie Kirk McLean, current Winnipeg Blue Bombers linebacker Adam Bighill, as well as longtime CFL kicker Paul McCallum.

Hockey Night in Canada broadcaster Jim Hughson – a South Surrey resident – will once again serve as event MC.

The last Nite of Champions event – which was held in November 2017 – raised $110,000 for the KidSport charity, which helps cover sports registration costs for young athletes whose families could not otherwise afford to pay.

Previous Nite of Champions keynote speakers have included Canucks great Trevor Linden, longtime NHL executive Brian Burke, NHL and junior-hockey coach Mike Johnston and hockey player-turned-country musician Chad Brownlee.

For the second year in a row, Tuesday’s event will be themed to honour young, local athletes. The last event was baseball-themed to mark the accomplishments of the White Rock-South Surrey baseball team that played at the 2017 Little League World Series.

This year, the evening will have a soccer theme in recognition of Coastal FC’s under-17 girls team, which in October won a national title at South Surrey Athletic Park.
