High school basketball player sinks 96 points to smash B.C. record

Diego Maffia nearly scores 100 for Oak Bay in Kelowna tournament

Diego Maffia only started to realize he was doing something special when the Kelowna crowd watching the game between Oak Bay High School and the Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds started to get loud.

“I don’t think it really sunk in until the end of the [fourth quarter] what was happening and the crowd was being loud that I had an idea of how many points I had,” said the Brazilian-born Maffia.

Last year, he was the Most Valuable Player as Oak Bay won its fourth consecutive Vancouver Island finals. Maffia has also helped to lead the school’s soccer team to success.

Maffia finished the game with 96 points — a new record by a British Columbia high school player. Nelson’s Greg DeVries held the previous record with 82 points scored in 1991.

“This record means a lot to me because it shows all the hard work I put in paying off and after the game,” said Maffia. “I was still in shock about what had just happened and just wanted to take it all in and enjoy the moment.”

Saturday’s game was part of the 46th annual Western Canada Basketball Tournament held in Kelowna, featuring eight teams.
