Every day we are subject to numerous types of pollution.

Air pollution from vehicles, industry and, now more and more, from fires. Land pollution from ever-increasing landfills due to our throwaway society. Pollution choking our creeks and rivers killing fish stocks. Giant islands of floating garbage and plastic fouling our oceans. These are just a few examples that are highly visible.

Another type not visible is noise pollution, especially traffic noise.

I live in North Delta in close proximity to Nordel Way and 84th Avenue. Understandably there is not much that can be done regarding normal traffic and buses, fire and police vehicles, etc.

However, something has to be done regarding the inconsiderate drivers operating motorcycles, muscle cars, sports cars, etc. with little or no exhaust muffling.

They must think it’s loudest one wins. They can be heard flying down Nordel and up 84th Ave., pushing their engines to the red line to maximize the noise, their stereos and subwoofers pounding out to be heard over the exhaust. Who exactly are they trying to impress?

I am a senior who over the years have owned numerous motorcycles, muscle cars, etc. and never felt the need to be deafening. It is very difficult to enjoy a nice summer evening on your patio or deck with these jerks flying around.

It feels some days like living on a drag strip. I anxiously listen for the sound of a redliner blowing up his engine.

I understand the police have a hard enough time combating crime but there must be something they can do. The Delta Police station is right on 84th Ave. — they must hear this. I know there are noise bylaws.

They have no problem setting up speed radar sites, why not add decibel readings to them? Usually speed and noise go hand-in-hand.

Perhaps they can work with ICBC to force offenders to conform to standards via inspections, impounding or what have you. Repeat offenders could be subjected to cancelling of their plates and insurance. Problem solved.

As for the operators of these vehicles, give us a break. We have a right to enjoy peaceful living without listening to you guys. And to those who agree with my sentiments, stand up and be heard. Thank you.
