UPDATE: Richmond RCMP say hospital patient stole police car, crashed it

The province’s police watchdog has been notified of the collision on Blundell at Lucas

The Independent Investigations Office says it has been notified after two police cars were involved in a crash in Richmond.

RCMP asked drivers to take alternate routes after a ‘serious’ crash, involving multiple vehicles, on Gilbert Road, south of Blundell, on Monday just before 2 p.m.

Police said the incident started when they were called to a Richmond hospital for a report of a patient fleeing on foot. A Mountie found the man but he managed to avoid the officer and get into a police car and drive away.

RCMP said the man crashed the stolen police car into a civillian car and an unmarked police car near Gilbert and Donald Roads before hitting a second vehicle in the 8200 bloack of Gilbert Road. He was arrested after the second crash, which left a woman in serious condition. One Mountie is being treated for minor injuries.
