UPDATED: Alex Fraser Bridge reopened after lengthy closure due to falling ice

Motorists had been redirected to Pattullo or Massey Tunnel instead due to falling ice hazard

The Alex Fraser Bridge was closed to traffic due to falling ice for much of Saturday, but reopened shortly after 5:30.

DriveBC issued the advisory at 11 a.m. that motorists should use the Pattullo Bridge or Massey Tunnel as an alternative.

The transportation ministry had cautioned earlier that there might be outside lane closures as a precaution today as snow and ice melts from the bridge cables.

The bridge closure followed a large number of claims of vehicle damage from falling ice or slush from the bridge’s overhead supports or cables during Monday’s snowfall.
