The Tour de White Rock cycling event – and BC Superweek in its entirety – has been cancelled this year “with regret” in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The decision – rumoured since last week and made official Monday afternoon – was made after a conference call with race directors and BC Superweek officials last Friday.

Of utmost importance is the health and safety of all who make BC Superweek one of the biggest professional cycling events in North America - the public in each community and visitors from around the world, sponsors and partners, volunteers, athletes, teams, and guests,” the BC Superweek release notes.

Superweek director Mark Ernsting added that “we must act responsibly to protect the many people who come together for BC Superweek from being at risk.”

The Tour de White Rock – which has been staged annually since 1980 – was originally scheduled for July 18-19. It would have been the final event of the week-long Superweek schedule, which also includes the Tour de Delta, New West Grand Prix, Gastown Grand Prix, Giro di Burnaby and the PoCo Grand Prix.

The event is Canada’s biggest professional road-cycling series and features more than $140,000 in prize money, with nine races over 10 days.

The Delta event was the first to be officially cancelled, with organizers announcing last week that it would not be staged.

BC Superweek will return for next year, the release notes, and will run from July 9-18.
