Delta School District’s top five earners are all making more than $170,000 in total compensation, according to the annual compensation disclosure report.
The totals are for the 2016/2017 school year, which ended June 30, 2017, and look at the district’s executive staff.
Delta’s top earner was superintendent Doug Sheppard, who’s salary came out to $184,480. He also received $9,316 in benefits, $25,570 in pension and $21,068 for a transportation allowance. His total compensation came out to $240,434 — up nearly $60,000 from the 2015/2016 school year.
Assistant superintendent Brad Bauman was the second highest earner, with a salary of $151,652. His benefits ($9,271), pension ($20,868) and transportation allowance ($15,299) brought his total compensation up to $197,063. That is up nearly $22,000 from his total compensation the year before.
Assistant superintendent Nancy Gordon and secretary-treasurer Joe Strain made the same salary in 2016/2017: $143,944. However, Gordon’s benefits ($9,260), pension ($19,769) and transportation allowance ($15,266) brought her total compensation up to $188,239, while Strain saw his total compensation come in at $181,840.
This past year saw director of international programs Dierdre Annett enter the top earner category for the first time. She made a salary of $134,696, plus $7,444 in benefits, $18,445 in pension, $13,133 in transportation allowance and $5,191 in vacation payout. Her total compensation was $178,909.
Compared to neighbouring school districts, Delta’s superintendent has one of the lowest total compensations. Surrey’s superintendent saw $334,833 in total compensation, while Richmond and Langley had $249,477 and $244,645, respectively.
However, Delta’s assistant superintendents make, on average, slightly more than their counterparts in neighbouring communities: the lowest paid neighbouring superintendent is in Langley, coming in at $159,458, while the next highest is in Surrey at $195,670. (Surrey only has one assistant superintendent, unlike the other three districts which have at least two. Another position, deputy superintendent, is used instead and was paid significantly more.)
Strain is the lowest paid secretary-treasurer among Surrey, Richmond and Langley, making about $8,000 less than the next lowest secretary-treasurer.
