Suspect faces six charges in Surrey’s Royal Heights shooting

A 33-year-old Surrey man in Royal Heights was shot on Nov. 23.

A 27-year-old man is facing six charges related to a shooting of a 33-year-old Surrey man in Royal Heights on Nov. 23.

The shooting happened near 96th Avenue and 116th Street, near the Surrey-North Delta border, at about 8:40 a.m. The victim’s injuries were not life threatening, police said.

Royal Heights Elementary school temporarily went under lockout as a precaution while police searched for a suspect.

Trevor Robert McKay, of no fixed address, is now charged with discharging a firearm at a person with intent to injure, discharging firearm while being reckless as to the life or safety of a person, aggravated assault, uttering threats, using a firearm to commit an indictable offence, and possessing shaved keys for breaking into a motor vehicle.

“This individual was identifed as a potential suspect early on and was in custody on unrelated matters shortly after this incident,” Surrey RCMP Corporal Scotty Schumann said. “This incident is not related to the current conflicts being experienced by several jurisdications around the Lower Mainland.”

Schumann said McKay remains in custody.

There have been 56 shootings in Surrey so far this year.
