Surveillance footage helps police nab Surrey break-in suspect

Glen Nelson, 35, has been charged with breaking and entering, trespassing at night and mischief.

Surrey Mounties have laid charges related to three break-ins in Fraser Heights, assisted by video surveillance.

One of three suspects, Glen Nelson, 35, of Vancouver has been charged with one count of breaking and entering, two counts of trespassing at night and three counts of mischief.

“Security video played an important role in this investigation,” Corporal Elenore Sturko said. “Locking doors and keeping your home’s exterior well-lit are also good measures for preventing property crime.”

The surveillance footage was obtained from home security systems in the neighbourhood, Sturko said.

On Jan. 3 police found a broken lock on a backyard window after receiving a tip that three men had been tampering with a sensor light there. The three were gone when police arrived but were caught on video trying to get into the residence.

And then a break-in was reported Feb. 9. Video captured three men “walking to the rear of the residence, where entry had been gained.”

“A few days later,” Sturko noted, “on February 13, Surrey RCMP investigated another incident which involved tampering with exterior motion sensor lights. Again, three suspects were recorded on home security video.”

Police have yet to arrest the remaining suspects.
