Several escape from Surrey house fire Monday morning

A witness at the scene in Bridgview said a man broke into the home to wake up residents and get them out

Several people escaped a house fire in Surrey’s Bridgeview neighbourhood on Monday morning.

Surrey fire crews responded to the blaze, in the 12400-block of 114th Avenue, around 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 13.

A Black Press freelancer at the scene said several people were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, “including at least one man who broke into the home (to) awaken people and got them out of the house.”

Assistant Fire Chief Chris Keon said everyone got out of the house safely.

“There was one patient transported with smoke inhalation to the hospital,” said Keon. “Three others were treated on scene for smoke inhalation at the scene.

“When we arrived on scene, one patient was still on the balcony and coudn’t get out because of the smoke volume in the house,” he added, noting firefighters used a ladders to rescue the individual.

At 11:30 a.m. Monday, Keon said the fire was out but investigators were still on scene.

Asked if the fire was suspicious, Keon declined to comment.

“I can’t comment on that because it’s being investigated,” he said.

Most of the damage was to the back of the home, Keon noted.
