Police are investigating a possible arson at a park in North Delta over the weekend.

According to a press release, police responded to a reported fire in the playground area of Chalmers Park, located at 11400 76A Ave., at 1:37 a.m. Saturday morning (March 5). By the time police arrived on scene, Delta Fire had already extinguished the blaze.

Police are investigating the fire as an arson.

On Monday, city manager Sean McGill shared photos of the damage with council, saying the playground will cost about $125,000 to replace.

“As you can see from the photos, it’s completely gone, there’s nothing left. It’s devastating, obviously,” McGill said, adding that anything deemed unsafe had already been removed and the playground had been cordoned off.

He said city staff will report back to council as soon as they know when the playground will be replaced.

“We have prioritized this and it will be reinstated as soon as possible. We’re just trying to figure that process out.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Delta Police Department at 604-946-4411 and refer to DPD tips file #2022-4795.
