Ranjeev Sangha, 41, Surrey’s 14th homicide victim of 2018

Surrey’s 14th homicide victim of 2018 has been identified as Bhangra dance promoter Ranjeev Sangha, 41.

A tribute to him on Facebook called him an “era,” and said his “infectious smile and laughter will be missed by many.”

The shooting happened in Newton just before noon Monday, in the 14600-block of Southview Drive. Police have not yet identified a suspect or revealed a theory as to motive.

“Those responsible for the shooting immediately left the area in a black four-door sedan,” Corporal Frank Jang of IHIT said said Tuesday. About an hour after the shooting, police were alerted to a black sedan burning near the 12000-block of Cambie “It was found approximately 100 metres off of Cambie Road on a pedestrian path.”

“Detectives would like to speak with anyone that has information about this vehicle and are seeking dash cam video from drivers who were travelling between Surrey and Richmond along Highway 99 or Highway 91 between 11:46 a.m. and 12:49 p.m.,” Jang said. “Retracing Ranjeev Sangha’s movements prior to his death will be one of the priorities for our detectives and we urge anyone who can help us achieve this end to contact us immediately.”

Vancouver in comparison has recorded 15 homicides so far in 2018.

There have been 38 shootings in Surrey this year.

There were 59 shootings in Surrey during 2017, in 2016 there were 61 and in 2015 there were 88.

At least nine of Surrey’s 2018 homicide victims had been shot.
