Seaquam Secondary’s aging message board will be getting an upgrade in the new year, now that the school district has permission to install a new electronic sign on the property.

On Dec. 17, Delta council voted to approve a development variance permit that would allow the school to get the electronic message board. The approval comes with the condition that the sign doesn’t flash, use animation or contain third-party advertising. It also must be dimmed between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.

According to Seaquam principal Rick Mesich, the physical space around the school was something that had been in need of improvement for a long time. A new sign was brought forward as a priority after consultation with staff, students and parents.

Mesich said in an email that the current sign is “limited with regard to messaging and cumbersome to change” — something that will certainly improve with the new message board.

Seaquam’s new sign will feature an updated school logo, as well as an LED message section. Drawings indicate the sign will be on the same location as the existing board.

Ordinarily, electronic signs are not permitted on school grounds, although South Delta Secondary and Delta Secondary both have them.

Mesich said the school expects to have the new sign installed over the holiday break.
