Five North Delta households returned home this morning after they were evacuated Wednesday night after lighting hit a tree on the 11100 block of 92A Avenue.
The Delta fire department was called to the scene at 8:47 p.m. Delta police, the Corporation of Delta's engineering department and B.C. Hydro were also present.
The tree, which was located on private property, was deemed structurally unstable, deputy fire chief Guy McKintuck said. Residents in the surrounding houses were advised to evacuate as a precautionary measure until the tree could be properly assessed.
The property owner had the tree assessed Thursday morning, and the residents were told mid-morning they could come back.
The tree will likely be removed, although McKintuck doesn't know if the tree will be fully or partially taken down.
No injuries were reported. No other lighting strikes were reported in the area.
