North Delta crime beat, week of Nov. 21

A selection of property crimes submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department

The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.

The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:

• Nov. 21, 4:50 p.m., 8700-block 120th St.: Police were dispatched to a possible impaired driver after a vehicle was observed colliding with a parked vehicle. Police located the vehicle and found the driver slumped over the steering wheel. Police read the breath demand, and issued the driver a 90-day driving prohibition after the driver refused to abide by the lawful demand. The vehicle was impounded for the mandatory 30-day period.

• Nov. 22, 4:00 p.m., Cliveden Avenue: Police were dispatched to a reported theft from vehicle, after an unknown individual stole a significant quantity of Amazon products. Police suggested an increase in CCTV coverage to help prevent future thefts, especially with the holidays underway.

• Nov. 22, 9:46 a.m., 8800-block 120th St.: Police conducted a traffic to check for sobriety, and noted the distinct odour of liquor emanating from the driver’s breath. The driver initially provided a false name, but confirmed their identity as police read the breath demand, which resulted in two “fail” samples. The driver was issued a 90-day driving prohibition, and had their vehicle impounded for the mandatory 30-day period.

• Nov. 23, 10:00 a.m., 11000-block 74B St.: Police were dispatched to a reported catalytic converter theft from a motor home. DPD community police officers are advising homeowners to check their vehicles more frequently, and note that motor homes are being targeted, presumably since they are not in use right now.

• Nov. 25, 7500-block 120th St.: Police were dispatched by EHS advising of a three-vehicle collision wherein airbags were deployed. One vehicle had been travelling down 120th Street when it hit a Hyundai. The driver fled the scene of the collision and the file is under investigation.

• Nov. 27, 11:41 p.m., location withheld: Police were dispatched to an interrupted theft. A homeowner found a suspect under their vehicle attempting to steal the catalytic converter after noticing a dark, older-model SUV pull up beside their vehicle and seeing sparks begin to fly from under it. The homeowner ran out and chased away the suspect, who got into a vehicle driven by an accomplice.
