Nordel Way is closed westbound between 84th Avenue and Highway 91 following a fatal crash this afternoon.
At approximately 2:10 p.m., a vehicle travelling west along Nordel left the road and struck the structure holding up the overhead highway entrance signs. The impact caused the structure to collapse onto the roadway, blocking traffic.
The driver and lone occupant of the vehicle died at the scene. Police are in the process of confirming the driver’s identity and notifying next of kin.
Westbound lanes on Nordel Way are currently shut down and traffic is being re-routed at 84th Avenue. The road closure will be in place for several hours while crews work to remove the overhead sign structure and police continue their investigation.
Although there are two eastbound lanes getting through, there is significant congestion and police recommend motorists avoid the area.
This is not the first fatal accident on that stretch of road this year. A motorcyclist was killed in the same spot on Aug. 6 after he lost control and crashed into a barricade.
