A 52-year-old man has been charged with arson after two fires burned in Surrey just 12 hours apart.

Surrey RCMP say the first fire happened before midnight on May 28 at a building in the 10000-block of 117 Street. Two businesses on the lower level were damaged, and residential units on the upper level sustained significant fire and water damage.

Less than 12 hours later, Surrey Fire Service and Surrey RCMP officers responded to a report of a man setting fires to bushes in the area of 104 Avenue and 122 Street. Police say officers found the suspect hiding in the area and arrested him for arson.

Paul Robinson, 52, has been remanded into custody until his next court appearance on June 13.

No injuries were reported in either fire.
