The next batch of local leaders will be named Saturday night as Delta’s 2022 municipal election gets underway.

Polls open at 8 a.m. today as residents head to polls to elect a mayor, six city councillors and seven school board trustees to a four-year term in office.

Thirty-one candidates — three for mayor, 13 for councillor and 15 for school trustee — are running in this election, including incumbent mayor George Harvie, incumbent councillors Alicia Guichon and Dylan Kruger, and incumbent trustees Erica Beard, Nick Kanakos, Bruce Reid and Val Windsor.

Regardless of who gets elected, both city council and school board will look very different come Sunday. Four of six current councillors — Dan Copeland, Lois Jackson, Jeannie Kanakos and Bruce McDonald — are not seeking re-election, and it’s guaranteed there will be at least three new members on school board with Trustee Laura Dixon retiring from politics and trustees Daniel Boisvert and Jessie Dosanjh pursuing seats on council.

Polls will remain open across Delta (and in Tsawwassen First Nation, where residents can vote for school board) until 8 p.m.
