Residents will soon be able to pay property taxes and utilities online using their credit card, after Delta council gave third reading to a new bylaw on Monday (March 12).

Currently parks, recreation and culture programs can be paid for online using a credit card, as well as dog and business licence renewals, municipal tickets and tax certificates.

However, this will be the first time credit card service will be offered for property taxes and utilities. Until now, residents have been able to pay in person (using cash, debit cards or cheques) or online through their banking institution.

Credit card payments for property taxes and utilities will only be available online through deltaonline.ca. Credit cards will not be able to be used for in-person payments.

Unlike the other services that can be paid for by credit card, utility and property tax payments will be subject to a 1.75 per cent service fee.

According to the city, their credit card payment provider, Moneris, charges a 2.3 per cent service fee on average for each online transaction. Delta currently absorbs this cost.
