Twenty Delta residents will be honoured for their committment to four Canadian themes in August, 2017, and the community will have an opportunity to choose which ones they are.

For Canada’s 150th anniversary, the federal government is putting forward an initiative to present commemorative pins to individuals across the country. Each MP was given a set number of pins to distribute how they saw fit. Delta MP Carla Qualtrough decided to give them out through a nomination process, offering the pins to 10 youth and 10 adults who are chosen by the community.

In order to be eligible, nominees must have worked towards at least one of four cornerstones in the Canada 150 celebrations: promoting a diverse and inclusive Canada, supporting efforts towards the national reconcilliation of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians, reaffirming the importance of environmental stewardship, and engaging and inspiring youth.

“Delta is rich with remarkable people,” Qualtrough said. “I am so proud to be able to honour inspiring members of our communtiy with these beautiful pins commemorating Canada 150. I encourage people to nominate deserving Deltans, and I am looking forward to meeting the honourees and hearing their stories.”

Nominations opened on Canada Day, and will close on Aug. 11, 2017. Applications can be made online.

Winners will be given their sesquicentennial pins by Qualtrough at a barbecue on Aug. 27.
