The White Rock Pickleball Association served up a fun — and successful — weekend at Centennial Park in White Rock recently, when it hosted the Paddles for ALS pickleball tournament, raising nearly $15,000 in support of the ALS Society of BC.
Despite a rain delay that briefly interrupted play in the May 8-10 competition, spirits remained high among participants and spectators alike, noted organizer John Bogar in a release, with the event drawing record participation, attracting pickleball enthusiasts from across the region who hit the courts for a cause close to home.
“Our local pickleball community is over 400 members strong,” said Bogar.
“We decided to use the Paddles for ALS event as our spring fun tournament to support the ALS Society of BC. Thanks to our amazing volunteers, the event exceeded all expectations.”
Elizabeth Hadley, another key organizer, highlighted the personal connections behind the fundraiser.
“It’s truly rewarding to support this great cause. Many in our pickleball community have been personally touched by ALS,” she said. “We initially hoped to raise $5,000, and now we’re approaching $15,000, with donations still coming in.”
Community support extended beyond the pickleball court, as spectators flocked to Centennial Park to cheer on players, enjoy refreshments, and take part in the raffle prize draw.
