• Delta Chamber of Commerce Delta North All-Candidates Meeting: Oct. 10, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Seaquam Secondary School, 11584 Lyon Rd. Join us at the Delta North all-candidates meeting presented by the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board (FVREB). We invite everyone to join us for the all Candidates session in Delta North for the 2024 provincial election. • Mobile Blood Drive: Oct. 12 at Baitur Rahman Mosque, 9570 River Rd. As the long weekend approaches, blood donors are needed now to ensure hospitals remain stocked with life-essentials for patients this fall. Cancer patients, accident victims and people with immunodeficiency, autoimmune and neurological disorders rely on blood donations every day. To ensure patients have the blood products they need, Canadian Blood Services is holding a mobile donation event on Oct. 12 at Baitur Rahman Mosque, with 85 open appointments available. New and returning donors are asked to book their donation window at blood.ca, using the GiveBlood app or by calling 1-888-2-DONATE (1-888-236-6283). Donors are asked to please keep their donation appointments, or if you are unable to make it please cancel it or re-book into the following month so that someone can take your place.
• Bates Ravine Restoration Planting: Oct. 13, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 7374 Bates Rd. Cougar Creek Streamkeepers are hosting this session on Sunday to complete restoration planting in Bates Ravine. There are only 60 more native shrubs and ferns to be planted and mulched. If 20 volunteers come, that's just three plants per person, leaving plenty of time for a morning walk or roll along the autumn-beautiful North Delta Greenway. What's not to love about this outing? Meet next to 7374 Bates Rd., with parking available at the foot of Bates and Blake Drive. Enjoy nature's green vibe, the good company of streamkeepers and geocachers, and the joy of helping your little corner of the planet. Sturdy footwear is required (gumboots are good), and long pants and sleeves are recommended. Work gloves and shovels will be provided, or bring your own, along with a water bottle.
• Schubertiade by the Academy Chamber Players: Oct. 15, 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at North Delta Centre for the Arts, 11425 84th Ave. The City of Delta and the Vancouver Chamber Music Society are kicking off the 2024-2025 North Delta Matinée Concert Series with the talented Academy Chamber Players for an afternoon of extraordinary musical artistry and memorable moments. FOOD DRIVE
• 32nd Annual Thanks 4 Giving Food Drive: Oct. 17, 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Delview Secondary, 9111 116th St. On Thursday, Oct. 17, hundreds of Delview Secondary students will be knocking on doors across North Delta to collect non-perishable items for the school’s annual one-night food drive supporting families in the community. Since 1992, Delview’s Thanks 4 Giving (T4G) has been the largest one-night canned food drive in the province. It has consistently collected thousands of non-perishable food items, as well as cash donations, to support Deltassist and the Surrey Food Bank. Last year, students set a record with a final tally of 26,449 non-perishable food items! The public can drop off donations before the event using the box in front of the school (available during shcool hours only) or come use the drive-thru drop-off the night of. • Fright Fest: Oct. 22, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at North Delta Recreation Centre, 11415 84th Ave., and North Delta Centre for the Arts, 11425 84th Ave. You’re in for a scare this October as Fright Fest returns to theses North Delta facilities! Experience the terror of our Haunted House (minimum-scare tours will run from 4 to 4:30 p.m.), tasty treats (Lions Club hot dogs and ho chocolate, Little Ooties donuts and grilled cheese, and marshmallow roasting) and activities including a photo booth, facepainting, Halloween crafts, Storytime provided by the Fraser Valley Regional Library, a sensory room, flash mob-style dance performances, Safety Bear with a DPD police car, a Delta firetruck, haunted house bouncy castle, ice skating and more. Fright Fest and the Haunted House are free and fully accessible; guide dogs are welcome but please leave all other furry friends at home. • Ready, Set, Pull!: Oct. 19 at Ladner Harbour Park, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Delta is inviting everyone who lives, works or plays in our city to volunteer for our Community Weed Pull. Amazing progress has been made and we hope to continue the trend. Why is ivy being removed? Check out the video "Invasive Species - English Ivy" on YouTube. Snacks, gloves, equipment, and training will be provided, so even if you have never done a weed pull before, you are more than welcome to come! Community weed pulls are an awesome way for you to learn about our natural ecosystems and take an active role in their protection.
