THIS WEEK

• Celebrate Pi Day: March 14, 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at George Mackie Library, 8440 112th St. Celebrate Pi Day at the library by creating your colourful paper pie, taking part in a pie walk, and hearing a fun story to do with pie. For ages 5-12. For children under 10 years of age, parents must be present in the library during the program.

• Science World on the Road: March 15, 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at George Mackie Library, 8440 112th St. Pull up a seat at your local library and explore amazing forces and motion with Science World on the Road! Explore fascinating forces such as gravity, momentum, friction and lift. Learn about the science behind spinning, falling and flying, with exciting demonstrations that Science World is best known for. This presentation is for all ages.

• Spring Fling Dinner & Dance: March 15, 4:45 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Kennedy Seniors Recreation Centre, 11760 88th Ave. The fun continues with our next dinner dance! Roxanne’s menu includes breaded chicken cordon bleu, mashed potatoes with gravy on the side, veggies and key lime pie for dessert. You may choose a vegetarian option at the time of your ticket purchase. After dinner, hit the dance floor with live entertainment from Two of a Kind, playing all our favourites. We’ll enjoy all the festivities including a cash bar and 50-50 draw. Tickets are $25 for members, $30 for guests, available for purchase in person or online at delta.ca/registration.

• All Things Green & Springy Paper Crafts: March 19, 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at George Mackie Library, 8440 112th St. Join us to make some fun green spring-themed paper crafts. Activities vary and are suitable for ages 5-12. An adult must accompany children under 10. Parents are encouraged to stay and participate with their child(ren).

MUSIC

• Open Stage: Last Friday of the month (March. 28), 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at North Delta Centre for the Arts, 11425 84th Ave. Entertain and be entertained! Share the stage with a variety of singers, musicians, poets, actors and dancers in this intergenerational monthly evening. Performing not your thing? Then sit back and enjoy the show! Doors open at 6:30 p.m., show starts at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 for performers and non-performers. Light refreshments served. • Delta Ukulele Circle: First Saturday of the month (April 5), 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at North Delta Centre for the Arts, 11425 84th Ave. Led by Gary Cyr, the Delta Ukulele Circle is an enthusiastic, welcoming and supportive crowd of music lovers with an appreciation for the ukulele. This tiny instrument provides a unique opportunity for individuals wanting to play and enjoy music together with others in a very social setting. Admission is $5. • Academy Chamber Players Present: Music of Twilight: April 15, 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at North Delta Centre for the Arts, 11425 84th Ave. The City of Delta and Vancouver Chamber Music Society invite you to enjoy an afternoon of beautiful music as part of the 2024/2025 North Delta Matinée Series. Join us for an evocative evening of chamber music with the Academy Chamber Players — featuring esteemed faculty members from the Vancouver Academy of Music — as they present "Music of Twilight." This concert promises to take you on a journey through the delicate and introspective moments of dusk, featuring masterpieces by Luigi Boccherini (Guitar Quintet No. 4 in D major "Fandango", G.448), Maurice Ravel (Piano Trio in A Minor), and Arnold Schoenberg (Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night), Op. 4, for string sextet). • Vancouver Cello Quartet: May 6, 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at North Delta Centre for the Arts, 11425 84th Ave. The City of Delta and Vancouver Chamber Music Society invite you to enjoy an afternoon of beautiful music by the Vancouver Cello Quartet in the final show the 2024/2025 North Delta Matinée Series. Formed in 2012, The Vancouver Cello Quartet is comprised of four dedicated professionals who perform original works and arrangements for cellos. This ensemble of classically trained players celebrates the unequalled sound of four cellos with the mission of creating an eclectic mix of repertoire for every concert, shaping the program according to each venue’s interests while maintaining our commitment to musical diversity. DANCE

• Let's Dance! Demonstrations and Lessons with Surrey Dance School: March 22, 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at George Mackie Library, 8440 112th St. Enjoy a demonstration of international folk dances with music from Romania, Bosnia, Portugal, England, Quebec, Macedonia, Armenia and Ireland, and then have fun learning some moves. The Surrey International Folk Dancing Society is a community group that meets weekly on Thursdays to learn and enjoy international folk dances. The dances come from many different countries, and the main focus is on having fun. For ages 8+. For children under 10 years of age, parents must be present in the library during the program.

HOBBIES/CRAFTS

• Knit ‘n Stitch: Sundays, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at George Mackie Library, 8440 112th St. Hosted by Fraser Valley Regional Library. Pack up your needles and yarn and head to the library. Knitting, crocheting, quilting, embroidery and weaving are fun ways to connect across the generations. Join members of all ages and abilities to share ideas and good conversation. WRITING

• Writers’ Circles: First Wednesday of the month (April 2), 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at North Delta Centre for the Arts, 11415 84th Ave.; first Sunday of the month (April 6), 12 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. at Douglas J Husband Discovery Centre, 4450 Clarence Taylor Cres. Delta Literary Arts Society hosts these supportive gatherings for writers of all levels with prompts, optional sharing and time for socializing led by caring and creative facilitators Anna Eastland (North Delta dates) and Angela Rebrec (Ladner dates). Sponsored by the City of Delta and Leah Bach and the Abodwell Team.

• BC Newcomer Services: First, second and Fourth Tuesday of the month (March 25), 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at George Mackie Library, 8440 112th St. Are you an immigrant to British Columbia? We can help you with the following: Canadian Pension Plan application, Old Age Security application, Canadian passport application/renewal, security licence renewal application, and much more. Services offered in English, Hindi, Punjabi, Dari and Pashto. We welcome the following individuals: work permit holders, refugee claimants, study permit holders, and naturalized Canadian citizens. Settlement workers from S.U.C.C.E.S.S. (Dari/Pashto) comes one the first Tuesday of the month and settlement workers from PICS (English, Hindi, Punjabi) come on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month.

• Navigate the Stars with H.R. MacMillan Space Centre: March 20, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at George Mackie Library, 8440 112th St. What is the night sky? What tools can we use to navigate the stars? Discover how to use a telescope to explore the night sky! Space science educators from H.R. MacMillan Space Centre will show you how to navigate the stars. They will also demonstrate what exciting discoveries are being made with telescopes worldwide and in space. If you have always wondered what more there is to explore and see in the skies above, this workshop for all ages is the rocket ship you’ll want to board. See you among the stars! This presentation is for all ages. Did you know that FVRL lends telescopes? Continue your journey into space and try a telescope out for yourself for free with your library card. • Teen Games Night: March 20, 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at George Mackie Library, 8440 112th St. Hey teens! Looking for an opportunity to get out of the house, bond over games while making new friends, and win some prizes? We got you! The Mackie's Teen Advisory Group (TAG) co-ordinates with the library to present Teen Games Night. Bring your friends, siblings, cousins, or anyone between the ages of 13-19 and come out to spend a night of fun with other local teens.

• Build a Makedo Gratitude Tree: March 26, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at George Mackie Library, 8440 112th St. Let’s get creative with Makedo and work together to construct a Gratitude Tree, complete with added leaves stating expressed gratitude. For ages 5-c12. For children under 10 years of age, parents must be present in the library during the program.

• The Secret Life of Bugs: March 29, 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at George Mackie Library, 8440 112th St. Explore magical insect stories from around the world and learn about different types of bugs. You can collect bug trading cards to keep. For children under 10 years of age, parents must be present in the library during the program.

• Mackie Library Teen Advisory Group: First Thursday of the month (April 3), 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at George Mackie Library, 8440 112th St. TAG members help library staff develop teen-oriented programs, assist at library events, and act as library representatives in North Delta's teen community. Monthly meetings are a time to socialize and plan ahead. Membership is a resumé booster and helps earn volunteer hours. Did we mention that there's free food? To join, fill out an application form and drop it off at the George Mackie Library. For ages 13 to 19.

PARENTS

• Preparing for Kindergarten: Free Online Parent Workshop: April 15 and 23, 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. via Zoom. The Delta School District is hosting a pair of free workshops for parents of children preparing to start kindergarten. The workshops themselves will run from 7 to 9 p.m., followed by a Q&A until 9:30 p.m. To join either workshop, visit zoom.us/join and enter the code 502 198 9793. • Fraser Health Falls Prevention Presentation: March 31, 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Kennedy Seniors Recreation Centre, 11760 88th Ave. The fall prevention team at Fraser Health is offering a free presentation details the four pillars of falls prevention: medication, vision, exercise and home safety. Contact the centre at 604-594-2717 for more details; register in person or online at delta.ca/registration.

• Vancouver Aquarium Bus Trip: April 10, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Kennedy Seniors Recreation Centre, 11760 88th Ave. Discover Canada's largest aquarium in the heart in Vancouver's Stanley Park! Learn about the wonders of wildlife around the word, from the enchanting tides of local Canadian waters to the vibrant coral reefs of the tropics and the exotic beauty of the Amazon rainforest. Connect with over 65,000 incredible animals, like the rescued sea otters and sea lions, across 120 world-class indoor and outdoor exhibits. Dive into an immersive "4D Theatre Experience," learn hands-on in the Wet Lab, get up close during interactive animal enrichment programs, and so much more. • Senior Saturdays: Weekly from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at George Mackie Library, 8440 112th St. Fraser Valley Regional Library encourages seniors to drop by the the George Mackie for a cup of tea and some conversation every Saturday.

• Surrey Singles Over Sixty: We are a friendly group that meet for dinners, cards, bowling, dancing, picnics, etc. We are based in the North Surrey/North Delta area. New members welcome. Call Julie at 604-218-2946.

COMMUNITY

• Coffee with Cops: March 21, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at George Mackie Library, 8440 112th St. Coffee with Cops brings police officers and the community members they serve together over coffee to discuss issues and learn more about each other. Youth can speak with police officers or members of the community policing team to get advice, learn more about local community policing, or raise any concerns informally or formally.

• Watershed Fish Release: April 12, 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Watershed Park, 11600 Kittson Parkway. Experience nature and help release 25,000 chum salmon fry into the creek! Join the City of Delta for an afternoon of educational displays, activities, tree planting and increasing our local salmon stocks. Follow the colourful fish signs from Kittson Parkway, Pinewood Elementary or Highway 10 to join in on the fun! This annual community event is held each April in the old pumphouse area of the park. Interpretive signage guides visitors through the life stages of a salmon and describes the critical importance of salmon habitat for long-term sustainability.

HEALTH/WELLNESS

• Yin Yoga: Every Monday, 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Deltassist, 9097 120th St. The main goal of Yin Yoga is to open joints, stretch deep tissue and release deep, long held emotion. In Yin Yoga we learn how to better listen to our bodies, by allowing ourselves to slow down enough to listen to the clues from the unconscious mind of what is actually going on we learn everything we need to know. Note: You will want to have a few pillows (couch, bed or throw pillows will work fine), as well as a blanket or two to ensure you are nice and comfy as well as fully supported for your practice. • Restorative Yoga: Every Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Deltassist, 9097 120th St. Restorative Yoga is designed to provide support and help the body relax. Often referred to as active relaxation we learn to fully support our physical bodies in order to allow for a gentle opening and softening in to relaxation. • Hatha Yoga, Breath & Mindfulness Meditation: Every Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Deltassist, 9097 120th St. Whether you’re seeking stress relief, improved flexibility, or simply a moment of tranquility in your busy day and life, these classes will provide a nurturing space for you to unwind and connect with yourself from a space of kindness and compassion.
