A 32-year-old Surrey man has been charged with allegedly assaulting a police officer during a traffic stop last week.

According to a Delta Police Department press release, officers responded to a report of an impaired driver at Highway 17 and 80th Street at around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22.

Police located the vehicle but the driver initially failed to stop for the officer.

A short distance away, the vehicle stopped and the male driver allegedly got out of the car and charged at the officer.

Police used a conducted energy weapon but it failed to stop the man’s alleged assault.

A second officer then arrived on scene to assist, and while taking the man into custody was allegedly punched in the face ad throat, sustaining injuries.

Police say Sahib Punia was arrested without further incident and was not injured, while one officer received medical care.

On Aug. 23 in Surrey Provincial Court, Punia was charged with assaulting a police officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and fleeing from police.

Police say he continues to be under investigation for impaired driving.

Punia was released from custody following his court appearance last Friday. His next appearance is scheduled for Sept. 4.
