Surrey city council approved a 36-storey residential rental tower proposed for Guildford, at third reading, after a public hearing on Monday.
The applicant and owner, Wall Financial Corp., plans to build a tower with 217 market rental and 48 below-market rental residential dwellings at 10611 - 150 Street. The building will occupy 5,776 square metres and contain 136 one-bedroom, 64 two-bedroom and 65 three-bedroom units.
There are five low-rise rental apartment buildings on site – with a two-storey building in the process of being demolished. The other buildings are three storeys.
The Surrey School District has advised the City of Surrey that the proposed development is expected to house 22 school-aged children with 13 to likely attend Holly Elementary School, five to attend Guildford Park Secondary School and the others to attend private schools, be home-schooled or attend classes in other school districts.
The City received a piece of correspondence expressing concerns and another in support of the project. Two people addressed council at the public hearing. One speaker who introduced herself as Penny said there should be twin towers. "We need the cheaper renting," she said. "So why don't we use the property at a much better efficiency in that retrospect?"
Deb Jack, of Surrey Environmental Partners, noted 22 of 26 trees on site will be killed but the proponent proposes to plant 53 trees for a total on-site of 57. "However, interestingly, the report says there are 10 bylaw trees which are going to be protected off-site during the course of construction and another two, it doesn't indicate exactly where they are."
