Surrey city council has awarded a $4 million contract to J. Cote & Son Excavating Ltd. for 128 Street drainage and sanitary improvements in Whalley between 100 Avenue and 97A Avenue.

The work will begin in April, to be completed by the Fall, with construction from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

A trunk drainage main will be installed and aging and undersized sanitary sewers will be replaced.

The contract is for $4,032,620.55 with the spending limit set at $4,450,000.

Meantime, council also awarded a $6,586,278.74 contract to Industra Construction Corp., with the spending limit set at $7,245,000, to upgrade a water pump station that was built in Whalley in 1961, and for generator replacements.

The station, located in the 14600-block of 105A Avenue, services the city centre, Guildford and Fleetwood. This work is to be completed by March 2026, with construction done from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

The contract involves replacing pumps, piping, electrical, instrumentation and standby generator equipment "which will improve the reliability and safety of the Whalley Water Pump Station," Surrey's general manager of engineering Scott Neuman explained.
