Surrey council awarded a nearly $4 million contract to build a new synthetic turf field-hockey field at Tamanawis Park in Newton to Cedar Crest Lands BC LTD. on Monday night.

The contract is for $3,871,350 with a spending limit set a $4,258,485. The work is set to begin on March 1 to be completed on Sept. 15.

The park is located at 12601 64 Ave.

"I can tell you the field hockey community is just so excited about this third field," Mayor Brenda Locke said, "so is the league, the leagues in British Columbia so this is a great addition to Surrey, and a growing sport."

Laurie Cavan, Surrey's general manager of parks, recreation and culture, noted in a corporate report that Tamanawis Park "is a growing centre" for field hockey in this region.

At 19.5 acres (eight hectares), the park already features two fully lit artificial turf fields, a field house, two baseball diamonds and a soccer field.

Locke said this third field is "very exciting for us in Surrey – this will make us the only, I believe, the only city that will have a park, or have a field this size, have three fields in a row."

Coun. Gordon Hepner echoed Locke, saying it's "going to be a really great, exciting event for Surrey, to get this new field.

"I believe that this third field will be instrumental in bringing more of the field hockey players out of West Van, out of different areas of Metro Vancouver and down to Surrey in to play international tournaments," Hepner said. "I know that we have attended these international tournaments in the past and ultimately it's going to be great for all of the teams that compete not only on an international level against Uruguay and Mexico, and all of the other international proponents of field hockey but the local clubs will learn to grow here too."

Coun. Pardeep Kooner said she's attended many events there including the Junior Pan American Games. "Every summer it's boiling hot and the parents are excited to be there, so it'll be really nice to have that third field there and I especially appreciate all the work that the parks and rec did to bring this forward to us in the previous year's budget because it's so important to try to get more sports activities that women and men can both enjoy equally, and I know there's seniors that play.

"It's just a great place to be and I'm really excited this third field is going in."
