The Independent Investigation Office (IIO) staid police did not cause 'serious harm' during a May 23 traffic stop where a man was injured.

The Independent Investigation Office (IIO) has closed its investigation into a report of a man who was injured during his arrest.

"The Chief Civilian Director’s delegate has now reviewed the evidence – including medical records and police information – and determined the man’s injuries do not meet the threshold of serious harm as defined under Part 11 of the  Police Act,"  reads the IIO press release Wednesday (Nov. 13).

The Police Act defines serious harm as an injury that may result in death, cause serious disfigurement or "may cause substantial loss or impairment of mobility of the body as a whole or of the function of any limb or organ."

Just after midnight on May 23, 2024, Surrey Police Service, Surrey RCMP and Delta Police Department stopped a vehicle in the 14400 block of 82A Ave after a reported violation.

"There was an interaction, and the man was arrested, suffering an injury in the process," reads the release.

The man reported the incident to IIO on May 27, 2024.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC investigates all police-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
