Another year of construction is coming to 72nd Avenue in North Delta.
On Monday, Oct. 21, the City of Delta is scheduled to start Phase 2 of its 72nd Avenue Roadway Improvements Project, aimed at improving safety, traffic flow and overall infrastructure along the busy corridor. The project is co-funded by TransLink as part of its Major Road Network Improvement Program.
“This project is a necessary investment for Delta, representing years of planning and a commitment to improving our community’s infrastructure,” Mayor George Harvie said in a press release. “It will address long-standing traffic challenges and create a safer, more efficient route for everyone. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this will have on our residents and commuters.”
Phase 1 of the project, from the BNSF Overpass to 115th Street, began in 2021 and was completed in 2023. Phase 2 works from 115th Street to Scott Road are anticipated to be substantially complete by fall 2025.
Planned enhancements include widening the entire length of road to four lanes, adding a centre median island, installing new LED street lighting along the corridor and a new traffic signal at 118th Street, upgraded bus stops, sidewalk improvements, the relocation of BC Hydro and telecommunication poles, and new signal equipment to support U-turns at both 116th Street and Nicholson Road.
Residents and commuters are warned to expect some traffic disruptions during Phase 2 construction, though the city says it will be making "every effort" to minimize the inconvenience.
To minimize traffic disruptions, major activities like asphalt paving will be scheduled at night when possible, and residents will be notified in advance of night work near their home.
